Drugs, hematologist Zamagni: "New multiple myeloma therapy improves life expectancy."

(Adnkronos) - "Becoming chronic means having a normal life expectancy with multiple myeloma, until the end." This is what Elena Zamagni, associate professor of Hematology at the University of Bologna and medical director at the Sant'Orsola Malpighi Institute for Cancer Research, said in commenting on the approval from AIFA (Italian Medicines Agency).

(Adnkronos) – "Chronicizing the disease means having a normal life expectancy with multiple myeloma, until the end." This is what Elena Zamagni, associate professor of Hematology at the University of Bologna and medical director at the IRCCS Sant'Orsola Malpighi, said, commenting on the approval by the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) for the new therapy with belantamab mafodotin for the management of first relapses of multiple myeloma.

"This condition," the expert explains, "is unfortunately a reality for some patients. Having a powerful drug available from the early stages of relapse, that is, from the first relapse, that intercepts this very important target in myeloma, BCMA, is a step in this direction: to induce a profound and lasting response at the first relapse, allowing the patient to continue on, until the end of their life or, possibly, until further innovations are forthcoming."

“Our goal,” Zamagni continues, “is naturally to try to cure as many patients as we can.

For all those who do not fully recover, we can perform this operation, ferrying them as far forward as possible, with a balance between therapy and quality of life, to bring them precisely to the end of their journey or possibly to the next innovation".
