On March 21, 2021, Marta Novello, 26, was the victim of a brutal attack while jogging. While running, she was stabbed by a 15-year-old boy on a bicycle, an incident that deeply shocked the community. Jamal Tonelli was arrested in London in connection with another case.

The attack on Marta Novello and the young man at large

The attacker , Jamal Tonelli, now an adult and living in London after being released due to a transcription error , was assessed by a court expert, appointed to assess his mental capacity at the time of the incident. The expert concluded that, although the boy had a below-average IQ and some language difficulties, these did not compromise his maturity or capacity to understand and decide at the time of the attack.

The events date back to March 21, 2021, when Marta Novello, 26, was jogging and was approached by a 15-year-old on a bicycle, who, armed with a knife, threatened her for money and her cell phone. However, the robbery turned into a violent attack: the boy dragged the young woman into a ditch and struck her 23 times , leaving her in critical condition.

Fortunately, Marta survived and today, at 29, she has a degree in languages and is a teacher. Her attacker, on the other hand, lives peacefully in London , at least for now. In the new appeal trial, launched after the Supreme Court overturned her five-year sentence, the Court relied on expert Pesavento to clarify whether her abilities were adequately assessed.

Despite the difficulties, the evaluation confirmed that the young man was fully aware of his actions at the time of the crime. On November 14 of last year, the Venetian Court of Appeals judges upheld the sentence, still carrying a five-year sentence.
