(Adnkronos) – "We bottle nature. This expresses the direction of our sustainability journey. We have brands like Sanpellegrino water, Panna water, and Levissima water, which play a key role both in Italy and in exports, because we are ambassadors of Made in Italy. For us, sustainability essentially means responsibility: taking care of the communities where we operate.

"Territories with which we have a very strong bond, even of interdependence, because bottling nature means bottling it at its source. Ours is not a business that can be relocated, so it goes without saying that we have a very strong bond and a strong sense of responsibility in protecting the home of our water, our territories." This is what Fabiana Marchini, Head of Sustainability & Corporate Affairs at Sanpellegrino, said today in Rome at the Adnkronos Q&A 'Sustainability, the new keywords'.

"Being connected to the local area, promoting sustainability in our communities," Marchini explains, "means starting by listening to needs and being able to respond, that is, being aware that together we must face the challenges that await us.

These are challenges to combat climate change by caring for territories, ecosystems, and biodiversity, and ensuring extremely responsible behavior toward natural resources. Water is essentially nature. The program, "Source," is a key word because it evokes sources, but it's also an acronym—Future, Origin, Nature, Territory, and Ecosystems—that explains the purpose of our program, how we want to work to create increasingly resilient territories.

The project,” he continues, “essentially stems from the awareness that we must do our part. Over the last five years, we have invested €30 million in protecting ecosystems in the areas where we operate, enhancing biodiversity, and protecting water resources.”

"We have developed a project in Valtellina," Marchini explains, "to redevelop and restore some natural areas damaged by Storm Vaia in 2018. We have reclaimed the land and reforested it, generating benefits in terms of CO2 absorption and increasing the aquifer's recharge capacity: with reforestation, we have prevented surface water runoff. Over the course of 10 years, it will generate a water benefit of one million cubic meters, thus contributing to the regeneration of water resources. We are implementing a major project in the Bergamo area, where Acqua San Pellegrino is located. In Val Seriana," he continues, "we will build a public water purification plant that will guarantee a constant water supply for 300,000 residents. The plant, worth €11 million, will be donated to the community and will generate a water benefit of 4 million cubic meters per year. In the Medio Brenta Valley, in San Giorgio in Bosco, we have created two artificial basins to recharge the surface aquifer. Brenta. The project benefits the community and agricultural activities, which suffer from water shortages in the summer. Finally, in Mugello,” he concludes, “we are inaugurating the reopening of the Gabbianello Oasis, a former WWF oasis that had been abandoned and degraded. We have completely redeveloped it, strengthening the wetland's banks, implementing reforestation projects, and enhancing biodiversity. We have also given back to the community an important space.”
