Marches, Archbishop Castellucci: Condemn violence but listen to young people

Modena, October 21 (askanews) – "It wouldn't be right to simply put a lid on it because, once order is restored, we'll be fine. That's not the case. We need to create places of listening and experiences where adolescents and young people can truly express what's inside them." This was stated by Monsignor Erio Castellucci, Archbishop of Modena-Nonantola, Bishop of Carpi, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Avvenire, commenting on the riots that broke out in recent days in Milan and other Italian cities during youth demonstrations.

The archbishop spoke on the sidelines of the presentation of the anti-poverty agreement between the Municipality of Modena and the Archdiocese. "We need to think about it. I don't have a clear picture to analyze it properly. It seems to me that it's been smoldering like a fire under the ashes for some time," Castellucci said. During some meetings with high schools, he explained, students always ask him, "How can we face our future at a time when the horizon seems so low from a geopolitical, environmental, and relational perspective."

Among young people, "there's this anger because they're exposed to a world that seems unable to speak to the future, but only to the present or even the past, as we older people sometimes do." According to the archbishop, the protests erupted "partly in imitation of what's happening in France, partly because some people have this violent nature, and this is certainly to be condemned."

"I hope this type of demonstration will have its days numbered," the prelate added. "The cause of causes is trying to create a more livable world for them."
