(Adnkronos) – "Shine light on CIDP," the traveling campaign promoted by argenx Italy Srl, kicks off in Milan's Corvetto neighborhood to raise awareness about Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) and its impact on people's lives. The first event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3rd, followed by a second stop on November 25th in Rome's Tor Bella Monaca neighborhood.

Two meetings open to the public will bring together neurologists, patient representatives, and urban planning experts to foster a dialogue between science, direct experience, and the local community. The choice of urban peripheries stems from the parallel with the peripheral nervous system, the network of nerves that connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, enabling movement and sensation.

Less well-known than the brain, peripheral nerves are essential to our autonomy and overall well-being. Likewise, the suburbs represent vital, dynamic, and essential parts of the city, rich in identity, resources, relationships, and extraordinary potential. The initiative thus aims to enhance both contexts, emphasizing how the organism and the urban community can only function fully if each of their components is recognized and protected in its fundamental role, without ever associating the suburbs with disease or degradation.

CIDP is a rare autoimmune, demyelinating neurological disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin, the sheath that covers peripheral nerve fibers, compromising the proper transmission of impulses.

The disease manifests itself through muscle weakness, sensory changes, marked difficulty walking, and balance problems. Basic daily tasks such as climbing stairs, grasping an object, driving, or moving independently can become complex and burdensome, directly impacting work, family life, and social relationships. Accurate information about these specific manifestations is crucial: early recognition of symptoms allows for proper and timely specialist assessment, which is essential to preserve nerve function, halt the progression of damage, and prevent the development of an irreversible disability. "Living with CIDP can mean having to reorganize one's daily routine, change habits, and address challenges that impact one's personal and social life. For those living with this disease, maintaining independence means being able to continue to choose, plan, and participate. Initiatives like 'Shine light on CIDP' allow us to share our experiences and help us better understand the needs of individuals and their families," says Roberto Carretto, Vice President of CIDP Italia Aps.

The Milan event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, at 6:00 p.m., at the Teatro della Quattordicesima, located at Via Oglio 18 in the Corvetto neighborhood. Admission is free. The evening will feature an informative and interactive talk moderated by Nicoletta Carbone, a Radio 24 journalist, with the participation of Silvia Rossi, Medical Director of argenx Italy; Yuri Falzone, a neurologist at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan; Roberto Carretto, Vice President of CIDP Italia Aps; Guido Bertolaso, Councilor for Welfare of the Lombardy Region; and Azzurra Muzzonigro, an architect and urban planning expert. The discussion will compare the medical perspective, the experiences of people with CIDP, and the contribution of urban planning, exploring the meaning of autonomy and the value of participation in everyday life. The evening will conclude with a flash mob during which the audience will simultaneously turn on the green lights, a collective gesture to raise awareness for the CIDP and engage citizens. The campaign will continue on November 25th in Rome, at the Oratory of the Parish of Santa Rita a Torre Angela, in the Tor Bella Monaca neighborhood.
