Kohat, September 19 (askanews) – At least 31 people have been killed in a suicide attack on a police headquarters in Pakistan. Among the victims are 16 officers. Firefights and rioting are reportedly ongoing today, a senior police official told AFP, with several militants still barricaded in the section inside the Kohat police complex. More than 100 people have been injured.
"After taking off my uniform, I went to the mosque to pray," one of them recounts. "The prayer began around 13:15 PM, then the explosion occurred. Shortly afterward, a wall collapsed on me. I screamed for help, but for two or three minutes no one came to my aid. Then I lost consciousness.
Later, someone came, pulled me out of there, and took me to the hospital.” The attackers stormed the “Old Police Lines” complex in Kohat, a city of about 220.000 people in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (KP). The facility is a district-level police headquarters and houses key offices of the Counter-Terrorism Department, the Special Branch, and several other police units.
