Massacre in the US: the shooting and the attempt to call for help from neighbors
The alarm was raised late Friday afternoon, when law enforcement received reports of gunshots. Officers who responded to the home found the lifeless bodies of two women outside.
According to the reconstruction of Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah, the images recorded by the cameras in the area would show the two women arriving in front of the house in an evident state of agitation.
They would have knocked insistently on the door and sought help from the neighbors , probably aware that something serious was happening inside.
The man then reportedly left the home and shot the two women , before re-entering the building. Meanwhile, officers surrounded the house and arranged for specialized units to intervene. When law enforcement entered the home, they found the 45-year-old man dead on the second floor , suffering from a gunshot wound that investigators believe he inflicted on himself.
Police said no further shots were fired after officers arrived and that the victims were already dead when they reached the scene.
Two children and a woman in her eighth month of pregnancy were among the victims.
The bodies of six other family members were found inside the house . Among them were a five-year-old boy and a girl aged approximately one year and ten months , found on the ground floor. Four other people, three young adults and a woman , were found on the stairs leading to the upper floor. The adult victims ranged in age from 19 to 51.
One of the women killed, a 24-year-old, was approximately eight months pregnant . The baby she was carrying also died. Authorities initially withheld the names of the victims and the man responsible for the shooting, while their families were being notified.
The scale of the tragedy has profoundly affected the local community and the emergency workers who responded to the scene. Police Chief Rick Lorah described the scene as one of the most shocking of his career. Support has been activated for officers and emergency responders due to the psychological impact of the intervention.
Erie Mayor Daria Devlin expressed her sympathy to the family and the residents, emphasizing that the pain of those involved cannot be erased, but that the community will not abandon them. The investigation continues to clarify the circumstances of the massacre and identify any potential clues that may help understand what drove the man to commit the massacre.
