(Adnkronos) – An 86-year-old man hospitalized at the Policlinico San Martino in Genoa, whose case had been reported by several media outlets, has died from a neuroinvasive form of West Nile virus. The hospital's medical director, confirmed the death. "The death was recorded at 7:23 PM yesterday in the M3 intensive care unit of the Monoblocco hospital, directed by Nicolò Patroniti, where the patient, without any other comorbidities, had been hospitalized for several days following a worsening of his clinical condition.

He was initially treated by the team at the Infectious Diseases Clinic, directed by Matteo Bassetti,” a statement read.

"What we hoped would not happen has happened," Bassetti emphasized. "This is the first West Nile death in Liguria, demonstrating that this infection must be monitored carefully, keeping in mind that currently it can only be treated with supportive care because there are no specific drugs or vaccines to combat it.

It should be emphasized that only 1% of cases of this disease can be severe enough to lead to death. We are, however, working to monitor the situation and best manage affected patients.
