He died in hospital a few hours after being stopped by the Carabinieri . The Lodi Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the death of Agostino Conigliaro , 39, who suffered cardiac arrest during a police operation at dawn on Sunday, October 11. Investigators are reconstructing the sequence of events, from the initial intervention to the rescue, to clarify the cause of death and verify any possible culpability.
An autopsy has been ordered, while recordings of the 112 calls are being acquired and conversations with the responding military personnel are being interviewed.
Dead after being stopped by the Carabinieri: the intervention at dawn and the attempts at resuscitation
The alarm was raised around 4.30am, when some residents of Via Vittime della Violenza contacted the emergency number after noticing a man on the perimeter wall of a villa.
According to initial reconstructions, the 39-year-old may have attempted to enter the property and remained trapped , in a state of strong agitation.
The Carabinieri arrived on the scene and helped him down. Because the man continued to scream and struggle, the officers immobilized and handcuffed him , according to investigators, to prevent him from injuring himself or others.
During this phase, Conigliaro suffered cardiac arrest . The Carabinieri immediately began CPR, using the defibrillator available on a police car that had responded to the incident. Several bystanders apparently assisted in the operation. The 39-year-old was then transported to the hospital in critical condition, but died the next morning.
The investigation and the "shield for the agents"
The Lodi Public Prosecutor's Office, led by Prosecutor Laura Pedio, is examining every aspect of the operation . The two Carabinieri officers involved have been entered into the preliminary records register, the so-called Model 45 bis, a procedure established for situations in which a potentially criminally relevant act may have been committed with justifiable cause. This mechanism is commonly referred to as a "shield for officers."
According to the reconstruction provided by the Prosecutor's Office, Conigliaro allegedly displayed violent and severely self-harming behavior in a condominium courtyard, circumstances that led the police to restrain him and handcuff him.
The investigations, however, do not concern only the actions of law enforcement. The prosecutor specified that any negligent conduct by medical personnel will also be assessed . The autopsy and forensic examinations will clarify the causes of death and help establish whether any culpability was involved in the various phases of the intervention and rescue operations. Currently, the investigation is ongoing and no individual culpability has been established.
