Human remains found during an excavation: work suspended in Montesano sulla Marcellana
As reported by Il Mattino , an unexpected discovery has led to the suspension of work in Piazza Gagliardi , in the center of Montesano sulla Marcellana, a few steps from the town hall. During an excavation conducted by Enel , some human remains emerged just below street level . The presence of the bones immediately halted operations in the area and required the intervention of the relevant authorities.
The Superintendency arrived on site, accompanied by an archaeologist, to carry out an initial assessment of the find and collect information useful for understanding its nature.
Human remains found during an excavation: investigations into the possible burial
According to Mayor Giuseppe Rinaldi , initial checks show that the remains appear to belong to two people.
However, this is still a preliminary assessment: further examinations by specialists will clarify the actual composition of the find and, above all, the period of burial . At the moment, it is not possible to establish with certainty when the individuals found lived or under what circumstances they were buried.
Experts will also need to analyze the position of the bones, the soil characteristics, and any nearby features to reconstruct the archaeological context. Among the possibilities that may be considered is that of a burial dating back to periods marked by epidemics, but there is currently insufficient evidence to link the find to an epidemic event. Work therefore remains suspended in the affected area, while the Superintendency continues its investigations to determine the origin and dating of the remains.
