(Adnkronos) – "Environment, lifestyle, and social conditions are factors that significantly impact our brain health. Genetics explains some neurological diseases, and most of these are due to an interaction between the genome and the environment. Today, the concept of the exposome is gaining ground, that is, the sum of all the factors to which an individual is exposed throughout their life.
A general concept that includes social, biological, and cultural factors that interact dynamically throughout life. Therefore, this definition also includes a concept of time, which can lead to this exposure being predisposed to developing neurological diseases." These are the words of Leonardo Lopiano, councilor of the Italian Society of Neurology (SIN), speaking at the 56th SIN Congress, scheduled for October 24-27 in Florence.
“It's a concept that integrates the genetic profile and the way each individual reacts to certain environmental stimuli,” Lopiano explains. “We also talk about the internal exposome, which is the modality, different from individual to individual, that is implemented to respond to certain environmental situations, potentially dangerous to health.
In this case, we also speak of a neuronal exposome, which refers directly to nerve cells."
"Today," the expert specifies, "we have evidence that small particles of some air pollutants can cross the blood-brain barrier, reach the brain and nerve cells, and trigger neuropathological processes such as chronic neuroinflammation, alterations in synaptic transmission, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction, which can increase an individual's vulnerability and lead to the development of neurological diseases."
