(Adnkronos) – 'Friends Beyond Weight', a patient association affiliated with the Italian Federation of Obesity Associations (FIAO), "joins the appeal made by the Italian Obesity Society (SIO) to the government and parliament: the 2027 Budget Law must allocate resources to guarantee access to care for people with obesity." A statement states that one year after Law 149/2025, which recognized obesity as a chronic disease, the draft budget does not appear to include funds dedicated to treatment pathways.

Without specific funding, recognition risks remaining on paper, while the cost of visits and treatments will continue to burden families.

"We stand with Sio," says Iris Zani, president of 'Amici oltre il peso' and of the Fiao, "in asking the institutions to send a strong signal of concern, starting with an initial targeted intervention to support the most vulnerable people, both clinically and financially.

The right to healthcare must be guaranteed to every person, regardless of their financial means. This is only possible with supportive legislation and adequate, dedicated resources.

The association, the statement concludes, "calls for full accessibility, within the framework of the Essential Levels of Assistance (LEA), to obesity-related services, with ongoing, multidisciplinary care. It also reiterates its willingness to engage with patients, to Parliament, the Minister of Health, and the President of AIFA."
