Stable weather and sunshine up to 24°C in the major islands

The anticyclone brings sunshine and warmer temperatures, but the nights cool down sharply.

Since Sunday, October 25th, Italy has been experiencing a period of rain and mistral winds, only to experience a marked change in the atmosphere. The mastermind behind this new pattern is the anticyclone that, starting on Tuesday the 27th, has been consolidating over the Mediterranean, ensuring broad swathes of clear skies and a progressive rise in maximum temperatures.

However, the lack of cloud cover will favor more intense nighttime radiation , with notable differences between day and night. Below are the details for each Italian macro-zone and the outlook for the coming days.

The return of the anticyclone: stability and clear skies

Meteorologist Mattia Gussoni's forecasts indicate a solid high pressure system will move back into the Mediterranean basin starting Tuesday, October 27, with stable effects until Thursday.

This high pressure system brings widespread stability and sunny spells across much of Italy, eliminating the residual rain recorded the previous evening in Salento and the Tyrrhenian regions of Calabria and Sicily. The absence of clouds also favors a strengthening of the Mistral winds, with gusts that can exceed 70 km/h in Sardinia, classified as a gale on the Beaufort scale.

Rising temperatures: the regional panorama

With the central anticyclone, maximum temperatures will rise across the country. In the north, a peak of around 18-19°C is expected, while in central Italy, temperatures will reach 20-22°C, while the major islands could reach 23-24°C, with peaks observed especially in Sardinia. In the southern coastal areas, the influence of the Mistral will cause a slight drop of 2-4°C compared to the previous day, maintaining maximum temperatures no higher than 19-20°C in Salento, Calabria, and Sicily.

North and Alps: cold and first snowfalls

In the North, conditions remain relatively cool: minimum temperatures in the plains range between 4 and 6°C, while light snowfall is recorded above 1,600 meters in the Alps, especially along the French-Italian border. High pressure, however, is pushing the snow level in the Aosta Valley towards 1,400-1,500 meters, favoring a light snow cover along the central-eastern Alpine arc in the evening hours.

Center: clear skies and rising highs

In central Italy, the sky will be mostly clear or partly cloudy, with morning lows around 5°C in the inland valleys and highs reaching 16-18°C on Sunday the 25th, rising to 20-22°C from Tuesday onwards. The lack of precipitation and stable weather will make the days particularly pleasant, with plenty of sunshine.

South and Islands: moderate heat and northerly winds

In the South and the Islands, any remaining rainfall from October 25th will be limited to brief, moderate showers (less than 5-10 mm in 24 hours). Strong winds, usually from the north, will continue to blow along the coasts, but with reduced intensity compared to Sunday. High temperatures will range between 19 and 20°C on Sunday, then gradually increase by the end of the week, reaching 22-24°C on the main islands.

Cold nights and temperature swings: the hidden side of good weather

Despite the daytime sunshine, nights will be cooler. The lack of cloud cover allows the ground to rapidly lose heat, causing minimum temperatures to drop below 8-10°C in the northern plains and inland valleys of central Italy. This phenomenon generates a daily temperature range of 12-14°C, with marked differences between day and night. In the Aosta Valley and the Alpine regions, the colder air at high altitude will help maintain snow at altitudes between 1,400 and 1,500 meters.

Outlook for the end of the week: possible new disturbance

Models from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) are forecasting the arrival of a weather front from northeastern Europe starting Friday, October 30. This system is expected to introduce colder air and greater instability, potentially reactivating rain and gusty winds. For now, the stability provided by the anticyclone will remain in place until Thursday, but residents in the most exposed areas should keep an eye on the updates to prepare for a possible new wave of severe weather towards the end of the month.
