(Adnkronos) –
October 23, 2026, marks the 15th anniversary of Marco Simoncelli's passing, a painful milestone for one of the most beloved riders in the history of Italian motorcycling. "Sic," as he is remembered by all MotoGP fans and enthusiasts, lost his life at just 24 years old during the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit, leaving a huge void in the world of two-wheeled racing and in the hearts of fans.
Born in Cattolica on January 20, 1987, and raised in Coriano, Romagna, as he himself always recalled: "I was born in Cattolica on January 20, 1987, but I've always lived in Coriano, in the province of Rimini. My parents owned an ice cream shop, and my dad had a great passion for motorcycles and racing. So I spent my childhood surrounded by ice cream and motorcycles!"
From his first rides on minibikes at the age of 7 to his 250cc World Championship victory in 2008, his talent has always gone hand in hand with an overwhelming character.
For him, winning meant "getting to slap the flag," always driving at the limit but never losing his smile or respect for his homeland. With his aggressive style, trademark curly hair, and a spontaneity rare in the world of professional sports, he managed to earn a following far beyond his results on the track.
Fifteen years later, his memory lives on among fans, colleagues, and supporters.
His sporting and human legacy remains one of the most important left by a modern MotoGP rider. Many of his statements, over the years, have become veritable manifestos of his way of life. "First or last doesn't matter... the important thing is to have given your best in every single lap" or "to be strong and a winner, you have to slap the flag." And that's what he always did, a rider who always raced to the limit, but who never lost his authenticity.
There are many events commemorating him. His city is preparing for a particularly significant day. On Friday, October 23rd, at 7:00 p.m., the community of Coriano will gather at "Il Podio" on Via Garibaldi, where Mayor Gianluca Ugolini and the city administration will lay a floral tribute in memory of the champion from Romagna. The commemoration will be open to residents, fans, and motorcycle enthusiasts. Sports will also pay tribute to Simoncelli. On Sunday, October 25th, Riccione will host the 43rd edition of the Autumn Classic, a running race organized in collaboration with the Marco Simoncelli Foundation. The main route will be exceptionally 15 kilometers, a symbolic reference to the fifteenth anniversary of the rider's passing, passing through the hills dear to him.
They are all one flag, one face, and one number: 58, which isn't just a number on a fairing but has become a symbol. After his death, the number 58 became an icon for world motorcycling. In 2014, Marco Simoncelli was inducted into the MotoGP Hall of Fame as a MotoGP Legend, while the Marco Simoncelli Foundation continues to support social and charitable projects in his name. Fifteen years after that tragic October 23, 2011, Sic continues to be remembered not only as a champion, but as a genuine man, capable of leaving a profound mark on everyone who crossed his path.
