Adnkronos (Adnkronos) – Twenty-two healthcare workers are under investigation for the death of Pietro
Porzi, the newborn who died on September 16th at the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Perugia, a few hours after his birth at the Foligno hospital. The news was reported by the Corriere dell'Umbria and other local newspapers. The investigation is being coordinated by the Perugia prosecutor's office.
Prosecutor Massimo Casucci opened an investigation after the parents filed a complaint with the Carabinieri.
The healthcare workers involved, some working at the Foligno hospital and others at the Perugia hospital, are charged with conspiracy to commit manslaughter and negligent liability for death or personal injury in a healthcare setting. The notice of investigation, issued concurrently with the autopsy scheduled for Saturday morning, states that they are healthcare workers who, "in their respective roles, as can be deduced from the contents of the medical records and other medical documentation," may have "caused the death" of the newborn "following delivery."
The baby, who died on September 16 in the neonatal intensive care unit in Perugia, had been born a few hours earlier at the hospital in Foligno.
According to initial investigations, the birth was marked by complications that may have played a role. A suction cup was apparently used to facilitate the birth. The baby's discomfort appeared in the hours following birth, and given the rapid deterioration in his condition, doctors in Foligno ordered his emergency transfer to the neonatal intensive care unit in Perugia.

He died in desperate situations, despite paramedics' attempts to save him. The Perugia prosecutor's office has ordered the seizure of the two hospitals' medical records.
