As reported by Arezzo Notizie , the Arezzo Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the death of a 64-year-old man, resident of Civitella in Valdichiana, who died a few weeks after undergoing a colonoscopy. Following a complaint filed by his family, investigators are reconstructing the 64-year-old's medical history, which began on September 4 , when the man allegedly underwent the procedure at the Centro Chirurgico Toscano in Arezzo.
During the procedure it would have been a polyp was removed and, in the immediate aftermath, the course of the disease appeared normal. The clinic reported that the patient's condition after the examination was good.
During the night, however, the man began to experience severe abdominal pain and, the following morning, went to the emergency room at San Donato Hospital.
Here he underwent an abdominal CT scan and other tests before being admitted to the surgical ward. In the following days, he underwent surgery for a suspected intestinal perforation . It is currently unclear whether the lesion was caused by the colonoscopy or by other causes.

On September 21 , about two weeks after his initial hospitalization, the 64-year-old returned to the hospital for a check-up. According to Arezzo Notizie , his condition rapidly deteriorated , requiring emergency hospitalization . After further deterioration, he died.
Among the hypotheses being examined by the investigators is that of a serious infection, with possible septic symptoms, but this reconstruction is yet to be verified. The family filed a complaint and the judiciary ordered the seizure of clinical documentation and the autopsy, which will help clarify the causes of death and the sequence of events.
The South East Tuscany Local Health Authority (ASL) has also initiated an internal review of the care pathway, examining the timing, tests, and interventions performed. Currently, however, no causal relationship between the colonoscopy and the death has been established.
