Bagged salads are a convenient and practical product. They make shopping easier and speed up meal preparation. But once opened, do you need to wash them? The answer is: it depends on what's written on the package. If it says 'Washed and ready to eat,' then the salad has already been washed and dried by the manufacturer—which guarantees its safety until the expiration date—and therefore doesn't need to be washed again.

If this wording is not present, the lettuce must be washed." This is what the experts at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IzsVe) say on the information page with dedicated video clips.

Pre-packaged, washed, and dried salads "are part of a fourth-range fruit and vegetable category," experts explain, "and are commonly referred to as 'ready to eat.'

For pre-washed salad, simply follow the instructions on the package carefully: store in the refrigerator at a temperature below 8 degrees Celsius; consume within two days of opening and in any case no later than the expiration date.

To ensure product safety at home, "after purchasing bagged salad, it's essential to maintain proper storage conditions during transport and in the refrigerator, carefully reading the instructions on the label."
