Lucrezia Ciotti Alessandro Di Battista has left Cuba and is on his way to Italy , following hospitalization and emergency surgery in Havana. He will return by air ambulance, a journey of approximately 12 hours, organized in stages and at low altitude.
Di Battista's postponed return and emergency operation in Havana
An initial transfer to Italy had been scheduled for September 4 , but the worsening of his conditions forced doctors to postpone the departure and to subject Di Battista to emergency surgery on September 5 in Havana . The operation was successful and in the following days the Schierarsi association announced that the former deputy was facing "the post-surgery phase in the best possible way".
Two specialists from the Gemelli Polyclinic , a neurosurgeon and a resuscitator, also arrived in Cuba .
The Italian government, through Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani , had expressed its willingness to organize the medical repatriation, but Di Battista had made it known that he did not want to use a flight paid for by the state , relying on the coverage of the health insurance taken out for the trip.
After his clinical condition improved, the doctors finally gave the green light for his transfer to Rome.
Di Battista leaves Havana: 12-hour low-altitude flight to Italy
Alessandro Di Battista has left Cuba and is headed to Italy , after approximately two weeks of hospitalization and the delicate surgery he underwent in recent days in Havana. The former Five Star Movement parliamentarian departed today, Friday, September 11, aboard an air ambulance and is expected to arrive in Rome tomorrow , Saturday, September 12.
As reported by Repubblica , due to his health conditions, the transfer would have been organized in several stages and at low altitude , for a total journey of approximately twelve hours . Once in the capital, Di Battista is expected to be transferred to the Gemelli Polyclinic to continue his treatment. Luca Di Giuseppe , president of the Schierarsi association, also confirmed the departure , writing on Instagram: " Have a safe return, my brother. See you in Rome in a few hours . Thanks again to all the Cuban doctors who took care of Alessandro during these endless days . "
Di Battista was on the island for a report for Il Fatto Quotidiano when, on August 28 , after a severe headache, he was hospitalized first in Santa Clara and later transferred to a better-equipped facility in Havana. The diagnosis and prognosis have not been released.
