Midterms, China: Forward with the agreements reached between Xi and Trump

Beijing, Nov. 4 (askanews) – China is watching the new American political situation following Donald Trump's Republican defeat in the midterm elections, which handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress. Beijing is avoiding direct comment on the outcome and reiterates its willingness to cooperate with Washington.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning called the vote an internal US matter and recalled the agreements reached by Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, calling for stable relations and the resolution of differences through dialogue. Beijing is also keeping an eye on the American vote, at a delicate stage in relations between the two powers.

Here is the official reaction from the government and that of some residents of the Chinese capital. Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, states that "the midterm elections are an internal matter of the United States. China is willing to continue working with the United States to maintain and implement the important understandings reached by the two heads of state, strengthen communication, appropriately manage differences, expand cooperation, and build constructive and strategically stable relations between China and the United States, based on the principles of respect, fairness, and reciprocity." For Bo Shu, a 33-year-old designer, "the Chinese actually pay attention to the relationship between the United States and China.

I think ordinary people care a little more about them, because they affect so many aspects of life. You could say their influence is enormous.” “Personally,” he continues, “perhaps I pay more attention to the international situation. As for everyday life, what probably interests people most are oil prices. Everyone hopes to know when the wars will end and when gasoline prices can go down again, because it is a real concern for daily travel. Those who work in commerce, however, might pay attention to other related issues.” “Trump,” he adds, “is a rather impetuous guy, he does what comes to mind and is strongly driven by personal interest and practical gain.” “In the end, regardless of the election outcome, my hope is simply that the world gradually moves closer to peace and that relations between the great powers continue to improve,” adds Dong, a 35-year-old IT professional.
