The death toll from the collision between two high-speed trains that occurred this morning in the province of Toledo, Spain, is worsening hour by hour. According to El País, citing the government, at least 10 people have died, but there are fears the number could rise.
The accident occurred shortly after 9am on Wednesday 28 October on the Madrid-Andalusia line, near Urda station, between Los Yébenes and Mora.
An AVE (Renfe) train and an Iryo train were involved. Two carriages left the tracks and ended up down an embankment.
Rescue and blocked traffic
Rescue workers arrived on the scene with three medical helicopters and two mobile intensive care units. Authorities have not yet released a complete official count of the injured, which Spanish media describe as numerous.
Adif, the infrastructure manager, has suspended traffic between Madrid and Andalusia.
Dynamics still to be clarified
Initial reconstructions don't match. According to 112 sources cited by El País, the Ave struck an Iryo stationary on the tracks; other news outlets instead report two trains traveling in opposite directions. Further investigation by the authorities will be needed to determine what happened.
The balance, as mentioned, is provisional and could change in the next few hours.
