"Never seen a storm like this!" Hail, strong winds, and flooded roads: alert goes out.

Heavy rain, gusts of wind, and flooding hit the area and the hinterland on Thursday, October 22nd, with light snow falling in the mountains.

A strong weather system moved across Southern California on Thursday, October 22nd, bringing heavy rain, hail, wind, and flooding. A light dusting of snow also fell in the mountains, local station ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

The Wind in Victorville

In Victorville, further inland, gusts whipped up dust, trash, and debris, scaring motorists. Jolina Broady filmed the scene while stopped at a traffic light and told Eyewitness News she had never seen anything so intense and frightening. The video shows bushes being torn apart, a trash can being lifted into the air, and branches falling onto the roadway. According to the witness, the wind blew away fences and uprooted trees.

Trapped cars rescued in North Hills

In Hollywood, a Los Angeles neighborhood, a falling tree crushed several cars. Residents in several areas of the region reported hail and heavy rain, and the downpours flooded some neighborhoods and underpasses, stranding motorists. One driver, Jason Soto, explained that the water reached the hood and the engine stalled and wouldn't restart.

In North Hills, another Los Angeles neighborhood, a man was trapped in the Pacoima Wash, the rain-swollen canal, and was rescued. Two other people were rescued from the road above the canal.

Debris and snow in the mountains

There were heavy debris flows in the San Bernardino Mountains, but no damage was reported. A light snowfall blanketed Mount Baldy.

Rainbows and a Rescued Butterfly

As the sky began to clear, rainbows appeared in some areas. The storm also left behind a lighter episode: Maria Roman sheltered a butterfly that had been hit by rain and hail under an umbrella and offered it a slice of banana. According to her account, its wings then began to dry and move again. Her husband commented that the gesture didn't surprise him, because his wife loves animals.
