Adnkronos (Adnkronos) –
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has won the BOAT (All-Time Ballon d'Or) Award, a new recognition launched by France Football magazine to honor the best season ever for the Ballon d'Or. The winner of the award was CR7, who took first place thanks to his 2008 season, when he played for Manchester United, which included winning the Champions League, as well as the Ballon d'Or.
In this special ranking, which was voted on by paid users, the Portuguese champion surpassed Lionel Messi's 2012 and 2023 seasons. Ronaldo also won the European Golden Shoe that same year after scoring 31 goals.
However, the post published by Ronaldo himself on social media after the victory became official has caused a stir.
In a post with a photo of him holding the 2008 Ballon d'Or, the striker wrote: "Football belongs to the fans! Thank you to all the fans in the world, the best Ballon d'Or of all time is yours too."
Voting was open to players who had won the Ballon d'Or more than once, so only ten players were eligible for the 70th anniversary award: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Marco Van Basten, Michel Platini, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, and Alfredo Di Stefano.
Fans could vote online by paying a symbolic fee of 1 euro on the official website.
