The Florence District Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office has opened a murder investigation into the death of David Rossi, former communications director for Monte dei Paschi di Siena, who fell from the window of his office in Palazzo Salimbeni on March 6, 2013.
The investigation, launched in recent months, according to judicial sources, represents a new judicial development following the Siena Prosecutor's Office's two dismissals of the case as a suicide.
The documents were reportedly forwarded by the Siena Public Prosecutor's Office, also following the complaint filed by Rossi's wife, Antonella Tognazzi, and his daughter Carolina Orlandi.
The proceedings also included documents from the parliamentary commission of inquiry, which, in its interim report presented last March, ruled out the possibility of suicide.
Investigators have reportedly already interviewed several witnesses, some of whom had previously been interviewed by the commission. Among the elements being examined are the injuries found on the manager's body and possible connections to organized crime circles, including individuals believed to be close to the gang led by boss Nicolino Grande Aracri.
Among the avenues being explored is a financial one, linked to the Siena institute's sponsorship system. The investigations could concern the allocation of funding and the cuts to resources implemented before Rossi's death. The Brescia Public Prosecutor's Office has also reportedly opened a file on the matter.
The president of the parliamentary commission, Gianluca Vinci, intervened in the case in recent days, identifying former MPS president Giuseppe Mussari and former Fiorentina footballer Gabriele Ceccherelli as the alleged instigators and organizers of an act of intimidation against Rossi, which later escalated.
According to the reconstruction provided by Vinci, the initial objective was to persuade the manager to accept certain conditions. The allegations have been contested by the parties involved. Mussari and Ceccherelli are not under investigation based on the evidence reported.
The reconstruction is also based on the statements of two individuals, a Brazilian citizen detained for murder and a Calabrian businessman believed to be linked to the 'Ndrangheta, both of whom have been definitively convicted of slander. The manner in which some of the statements were obtained has been contested by the Brazilian citizen's defense. Meanwhile, Ceccherelli has withdrawn his availability to be heard by the parliamentary commission, with a hearing informally scheduled for November 3. His lawyer, Federico Bagattini, announced this, explaining that the decision is also related to the failure to provide the two declarants' complete statements, as requested by the defense without the redactions present in the documents. "The availability remains confirmed for the judicial authorities," the lawyer specified. The defense has also raised objections to the manner in which some of the statements were collected and to the possibility of interviewing the declarants without knowing their full statements.
