Elon Musk is once again investing heavily in US politics. Since July, the Tesla and SpaceX founder has reportedly donated $276 million to Republicans and his super PAC ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for November. According to the New York Times , the donations have pushed him to the top of the list of known campaign donors.
Texas at the Center of Musk's Political Strategy: Attacks on James Talarico
A significant portion of America PAC's resources have been directed toward the Senate race in Texas, where Republican Ken Paxton faces Democrat James Talarico. Musk , who lives in Austin, has intervened several times in the debate through the social network X, criticizing the Democratic candidate's positions on issues such as capitalism and transgender rights.
The committee also funded campaign ads and flyers highlighting Talarico's stance on transgender rights.
In recent days, the billionaire has also reiterated false claims about the Democratic candidate's recent absence from the campaign, attributing them online to alleged mental health issues. Talarico dismissed these claims in an interview with NBC, explaining: " It's not true.
I just had the flu and now I feel much better . " The candidate then added that the story represents " a good reminder that you can't believe everything you read on the Internet . "
Musk's political involvement intensified during the 2024 presidential election, when he reportedly spent approximately $290 million, primarily in support of Trump, also promoting controversial initiatives through America PAC. After the Republican candidate's victory, Musk joined the administration to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), championing a program to reduce public spending. He then left office in May 2025, sparking a public clash with the president, before a subsequent rapprochement.
Elon Musk and the record-breaking donation to help Trump in the midterms: the huge sum
According to information gathered by the New York Times , based on federal election documents and data provided by the billionaire's representatives, Musk's political spending would have reached at least $366 million through the end of September . Of this amount, $276 million would have been disbursed since July . This financial commitment has led him to surpass other major donors, including Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, previously listed by the newspaper as the main financial supporters of the election.
Among the largest contributions are reportedly $76 million to America PAC, the committee that supports Republican candidates in several states, and $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which supports conservative Senate candidates. Added to these sums are $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports Republicans in the House, $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, supporting Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race, another $10 million to the Republican Governors Association, and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
Musk's financial support isn't limited to his most recent donations. As of June 30, according to documents filed with federal election authorities, the billionaire had already contributed approximately $50,3 million to America PAC, as well as $10 million each to the Senate Leadership Fund and the Congressional Leadership Fund, and $5 million to the super PAC Maga Inc., which is tied to President Donald Trump. He has also contributed directly to the campaigns of several Republicans, including Anna Paulina Luna, Brandon Gill, Lauren Boebert, Darrell Issa, Mark Harris, and Senator Chuck Grassley, with contributions of $6.600 each, the maximum allowable direct contribution limit.
