(Adnkronos) – "Paper in environmental compliance is now obsolete: today, waste is managed digitally." This is the change explained at Ecomondo by Daniele Gizzi, national president of the Register of Environmental Managers, an independent body of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security that issues permits for waste collection, transport, and management. This system involves 171 businesses, including micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, multinationals, and public utilities, and has 830 authorized transport vehicles.
At the heart of the transformation is Rentri, the National Electronic Register for Waste Traceability, which came into force in 2025. Since September 16, the identification forms, the documents accompanying waste transportation, have also gone digital. "The Ministry of the Environment and this country have eliminated the paper-based procedures that had existed since 1998, and waste is now managed digitally," explains Gizzi.
The public portal rentri.gov.it also provides real-time information on waste movement across the country, with data also accessible to citizens.
