"For women with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer, a new non-hormonal drug is available to treat hot flashes, one of the side effects that can significantly impact the quality of life of women with the cancer undergoing endocrine therapy. Elinzanetant acts on the mechanisms that regulate body temperature," explains Matteo Lambertini, director of Medical Oncology at Galliera Hospital in Genoa and associate professor at the University of Genoa.
It acts on two receptors in the brain, involved in regulating body temperature and in the mechanism that triggers hot flashes. By blocking them, the drug helps reduce this disorder. In a randomized phase 3 study, elinzanetant was shown to reduce both the frequency and intensity of hot flashes. The patients involved had significant symptoms, with approximately 10 episodes per day.
