Defense, Mariani (Leonardo): Strategic agreement with Fincantieri

Rome, November 4 (askanews) – "Leonardo has a traditional presence in the naval and maritime domain, which we have developed and strengthened. At Euronaval, we signed a letter of intent with Fincantieri to reorganize and strengthen some of our joint activities: from Orizzonte Sistemi Navali's role in integrating the ship as a whole and the combat system, to collaboration in radar and unmanned systems, and Leonardo's role in the Combat Management System."

This was stated by Lorenzo Mariani, CEO of Leonardo, at the AIAD Media Space "en directe!", made available to Italian companies attending Euronaval 2026, currently underway in Paris. "This is an important step because it reestablishes certain priorities and boundaries for working together effectively, first and foremost in the interests of our domestic customers, but also for exports.

There is currently a very strong demand for advanced naval systems, and being present with the combined strength of Leonardo and Fincantieri, with Orizzonte Sistemi Navali as a player in the integration of the entire ship, is particularly important,” Mariani continued. “Euronaval,” the CEO added, “is also an opportunity to meet important customers, both in our traditional armaments component, with OTO Melara, and in onboard and maritime naval systems.

In particular, we have launched the development and deployment of a family of CMS systems based on SADOC for the Italian Navy's new DDX and on ATENA L for smaller vessels. This is a key point because it allows us to address two very different requirements, which also emerged from recent conflicts: on the one hand, highly advanced threats, such as ballistic missiles, which require advanced, sometimes complex, systems and a very strong use of artificial intelligence; on the other, much simpler, sometimes massive, threats, often faced at sea by much smaller vessels, for which agility, simplicity, and low cost, both in acquisition and deployment, are essential elements.
