Berlin, September 9 (askanews) – A showdown has erupted in the Bundestag's parliamentary budget debate, with AfD co-president Alice Weidel once again openly attacking German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, claiming that voters in Saxony-Anhalt have pulverized his party, the CDU, while the Alternative for Germany party is aiming to lead the next national government.
"The voters of Saxony-Anhalt have told them very clearly, in the language of the sovereign people: the black-red alliance is over. The people finally want political change and don't want things to continue like this," Weidel said of the current governing alliance. "In Saxony-Anhalt, the citizens have not only punished you, but have literally pulverized your party, the CDU," Weidel added, saying she and the party are ready for a "clear mandate to govern." Merz responded harshly to the accusations of the co-leader of the far-right, reminding her of the current impasse in forming a government in the eastern state: "The voters have expressed themselves quite clearly.
They sent a clear message to us too, and to me too. But you don't have an absolute majority and you won't get one in Germany either. Nowhere in Germany will you get a majority with this policy," Merz declared. The chancellor then attacked remigration, the mass expulsions of foreigners, which, in addition to the AfD, are being called for by many right-wing populists in Europe: "The term 'remigration' is nothing more than a synonym for ethnic cleansing based on origin and skin color."
