Rome, November 5 (askanews) – Paraguayan President Santiago Pena has announced his resignation following the Ueno Bank bankruptcy scandal, which saw the deposits of approximately 3 million savers frozen. “I have made the decision to submit my resignation as President of the Republic. I do so with the stability of our country, social peace, and the need to preserve our democratic institutions in mind,” he said in a video message shared on social media. Pena, who is close to US President Donald Trump, resigned after the opposition called an extraordinary session to begin impeachment proceedings in Congress and after protesters called for his resignation amid accusations against him of possible misuse of pension funds and an institutional cover-up related to the collapse of Ueno Bank. “I also want to apologize to the people if I have ever failed them. It was not my intention to betray the trust they placed in me.
Every day I have taken on this responsibility with the desire to work for Paraguay, but today my priority is only one: the peace of mind of the Paraguayans who have entrusted their savings to our financial system,” he continued.
