The price hike for gasoline and diesel continues. Unleaded fuel is at its highest level since June 30, 2022, while diesel is one cent away from its highest level of the year. Without the excise tax cut that expires tomorrow (although there is talk of further extensions), we would be at €2,346 per liter, well above the all-time high of €2,229 per liter set on March 17, 2022.
Today, Wednesday, September 9, the average self-service fuel price along the national road network is €2,067/l for gasoline (up 9 thousandths from yesterday), €2,176/l for diesel (up 7), €0,747/l for LPG (unchanged), and €1,769/kg for methane (up 7). On the motorway network, the average self-service price is €2,152/l for gasoline (up 9), €2,248/l for diesel (up 8), €0,884/l for LPG (up 1), and €1,752/kg for methane (up 5). According to Staffetta Quotidiana, Eni has increased its recommended prices for gasoline and diesel by one cent per liter.
For IP, we see a 2-cent increase on gasoline and a 1-cent increase on diesel. For Q8, a 2-cent increase on diesel. For Tamoil, a 3-cent increase on unleaded fuel and a 2-cent increase on diesel.
Breaking down the prices by sales method and brand using the data collected at 8:00 yesterday morning, considering all 20,000 or so points of sale that report prices to the Price Observatory of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy (road and motorway network combined), these are the average prices charged as calculated by Staffetta: self-service petrol at 2,059 euros/litre (companies 2,063, non-companies 2,051), self-service diesel at 2,173 euros/litre (companies 2,177, non-companies 2,157).
Petrol is served at €2,187/liter (companies €2,230, unlicensed stations €2,089), diesel is served at €2,302/liter (companies €2,349, unlicensed stations €2,196). LPG is served at €0,748/liter (companies €0,761, unlicensed stations €0,738), methane is served at €1,759/kg (companies €1,755, unlicensed stations €1,727), LNG is served at €1,690/kg (companies €1,705/kg, unlicensed stations €1,711/kg).
On self-service petrol Eni is at 2,059 euro/litre (2,277 served); IP at 2,067 (2,224 served); Q8 at 2,067 (2,223 served); Tamoil at 2,049 (2,111 served); on self-service diesel Eni is at 2,173 (2,391 served); IP at 2,185 (2,344 served); Q8 at 2,179 (2,337 served) and Tamoil at 2,158 (2,224 served).
The Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy announces that, based on the latest data collected by the MIMIT Fuel Price Observatory, the average self-service fuel price along the national road network today is €2,067/l for gasoline and €2,177/l for diesel. On the motorway network, however, the average self-service price is €2,152/l for gasoline and €2,248/l for diesel.
"In just one day, from yesterday to today, a 50-liter tank of diesel fuel on the highway cost 40 cents more, and a tank of gasoline 45 cents. From September 8st to today, that is, in just eight days, the jump is astronomical: +2,20 euros for diesel and +2,40 for gasoline," reports Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumers Union.
"This impressive increase will turn into a nightmare once the excise tax discount is removed. Diesel on the highway will rise from today's €2,248 to €2,419 if prices remain unchanged, which is impossible given the ongoing escalation in the Middle East. In short, the government must reconsider its decision. Not renewing the discount at this time would be irresponsible, not only for motorists but also for the impact on inflation, which already soared in August," Dona concludes.
