Accident at Fincantieri in Ancona: the investigation and the unions' complaint regarding safety.
The death of the second worker has brought safety conditions on construction sites and the use of public procurement back into the spotlight. The Ancona Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a case for manslaughter and negligent injury , aiming to reconstruct the causes of the accident and determine the substance that may have caused the blaze. Among the elements being examined by investigators is the possible presence of a combustible gas.
Following the tragedy, on September 30th, the Fiom Cgil, Fim Cisl, and Uilm unions called an eight-hour strike, demanding greater guarantees for those employed by external contractors. The unions emphasized the need to strengthen training and prevention measures , questioning a system of contracting and subcontracting that, according to their complaint, can make it more difficult to protect workers.
Sara Galassi, secretary of the Fiom-CGIL union in Ancona, also spoke out on the matter, announcing the union's intention to file a civil action . " The workplace massacres are unstoppable. The uncontrolled procurement system leads to these situations, and as Fiom, we will file a civil action against Fincantieri ," she told ANSA. Galassi also noted that, according to the union, this is the fourth death in three years at Fincantieri plants , reiterating the need to intervene to prevent further tragedies: " We cannot continue to die at work ."
A second worker, 29, dies in a workplace accident.
Kabir Mohidul , the 29-year-old Bangladeshi worker who suffered severe burns in a workplace accident that occurred on September 29, 2026, at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, has died . The news was announced by the Fiom Cgil (Italian General Confederation of Labour) of Ancona on October 28, nearly a month after the tragedy that had already claimed the life of another worker. After being hit by a violent blaze during work at the shipyard, Mohidul was rescued and initially transported to the emergency room of the Ancona hospital. His condition immediately appeared extremely critical , due to the burns that had spread over much of his body. In an attempt to save his life, orders were issued for him to be transferred to the Burns Center at the Pisa hospital, where he remained hospitalized until his death.
Sofiane Boutraa , a 55-year-old Tunisian worker , also died from his injuries in the same accident . The two workers were employed by a contractor and were performing carpentry work inside the plant.
