(Adnkronos) – Real Madrid has also apologized to China after the controversy sparked by a poorly received joke by Kylian Mbappé. The French striker, on the sidelines of the Ballon d'Or ceremony, which saw Harry Kane triumph in front of the former PSG player, commented on a meme depicting him as Mao Zedong, labeling him "a Chinese dictator."
The words provoked outrage in China and the Chinese people, so much so that the player had to issue an official apology, just as Real Madrid did today, given that the Beijing government has decided to black out all La Liga matches: "Real Madrid CF wishes to apologize to the Chinese people for the inconvenience caused by the recent statements of our player Kylian Mbappé," read a statement from the Blancos.
“Our club has a deep respect for China, its history, its culture and its people, as well as for the millions of Chinese fans who feel affection and admiration for Real Madrid,” he continued. “The club joins in the public apology expressed by Kylian Mbappé, in which the player expressed his regret for his words and reiterated his respect for the Chinese people.”
“Real Madrid reaffirms its commitment to the values of respect, coexistence, and understanding between cultures, and expresses its desire to continue strengthening the bonds of friendship and affection that unite it with China and its citizens,” the statement concludes.
