(Adnkronos) – A complex surgical procedure on a 102-year-old patient was successfully completed at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic in Rome. The operation, performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Professor Elena Gasbarra, director of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Unit and head of the bone fragility program, involved hip replacement following a femoral fracture, a very common and disabling problem in the elderly.
Despite her age and delicate clinical condition, everything went smoothly, and she is back on her feet after just two days. The personalized treatment plan was also crucial: in addition to the surgery, the patient was assessed for bone fragility to prevent further fractures. This was emphasized in a statement from the Tor Vergata Polyclinic in Rome.
After his discharge, expected soon, he will begin targeted osteoporosis therapy to reduce future risks and improve his quality of life. "Operating on such elderly patients requires a comprehensive approach, taking into account not only the surgical aspect but also the patient's general condition and bone fragility," Gasbarra explained. "This case demonstrates how, thanks to dedicated pathways and highly specialized teamwork, it is possible to achieve significant results even in particularly complex situations."
