(Adnkronos) –
How much is Jannik Sinner's knee injury costing him? The Italian tennis player announced yesterday that he won't return to the court until 2027, due to the knee injury that has kept him out since his Wimbledon final victory over Alexander Zverev. The German is set to overtake him for the top spot in the ATP rankings, but in addition to his number one ranking, the injury will cost Sinner several million.
Sinner, after having missed Cincinnati, the US Open and Beijing, will not participate in the Masters 1000 in Shanghai and Paris, as well as the ATP Finals and the Six Kings Slam, a very rich exhibition tournament scheduled in Saudi Arabia.
In total, the Italian will have to give up around 17 million, potentially, in prize money.
In Vienna last year, Sinner earned over €500,000 thanks to his triumph over Zverev in the final. Even more money came in Paris, where he managed to cash in almost €1 million (€946,000 to be precise) by defeating Auger-Aliassime in the final of the Masters 1000.
Sinner then won the ATP Finals without losing a single match, earning a total of 4 million euros.
The Six Kings Slam is a separate matter. The Arabian tournament already offers a €1,5 million entry bonus, and thanks to his triumph over Alcaraz in the final, he took home more than €5 million.
In addition to the prizes collected on the court, there was also the so-called ATP 'bonus pool', which aims to reward the most consistent and most participated tennis players in the Masters 1000, and which had allowed Sinner to pocket a good 4 million.
