Donald Trump's new attack on Pope Leo XIV. "He's putting many Catholics and many people in danger," US President Donald Trump told Salem News, two days after Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to the Vatican to mend fences following the recent heavy attacks on Prevost. Leo XIV "prefers to talk about how it's acceptable for Iran to have a nuclear weapon, and I don't think that's a good thing," Trump added.
In recent days, Trump has called the Pope "weak," harshly criticizing his positions on foreign policy and security. These comments followed the Pope's appeals for peace, particularly regarding the Iranian issue. Trump stated that he was "not a big fan" of Leo XIV, accusing him of being "very liberal" and of not adequately supporting the fight against crime, even going so far as to suggest that his very presence in the White House had indirectly contributed to his election.
The tone of the attack went beyond simple political disagreement.
In a lengthy speech, the president argued that the Pope should “focus on being a great Pope, not a politician,” accusing him of damaging the Church with his positions.
The Pope's response was firm but measured: Leo XIV declared that he was "not afraid" of the American administration and that he wanted to continue speaking "loudly against the war," while avoiding a direct clash with Trump.
