"We need a 10-point program." This is the message Walter Veltroni, Fabio Fazio's guest on Che tempo che fa, sends to the broader political spectrum. The center-left will likely choose its leader in the primaries. A duel looms between Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, and Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement.
"We should start with the program. Participating parties are certainly formed to win elections, but the argument 'we must stay united because otherwise the others will win' is a very simple, very understandable, and very shared one. The problem is that it then has a further specification: we need to create a coalition that serves to prevent the others from winning and then govern the country well, because what Italians care about is that this country is governed well," says Veltroni.
“And if what has already happened were to happen again – I'm thinking of 2006, when a large coalition was formed on this issue that included everything from Mastella's Udeur to the Communist Refoundation Party – when it came to governing, the difficulties and differences emerged.
Then a 200-page program was drawn up, and only Romano Prodi's strength managed to hold it all together." So, to avoid a repeat, what should be done? "Now, also to speed up the reading process, we need to draw up a program of 10 key points: school, work, Ukraine, Europe, security, the things Italians care about, and those that concern the country's destiny."
"And then we could discuss whether to hold primaries, secondaries, and tertiary elections. Because if we don't agree on the program, what's the risk? That we go to primaries, and whoever wins, wins in the name of one party," Veltroni adds.
"And if one side has a different program than the other, it's difficult to persuade the other's voters to vote for the former. So the first thing to do is define 10 major ideas that will ensure coalition unity, both in the election campaign today and in governing tomorrow. This is what should be done rationally," he concludes.
