Tonight, in the corridors of the Excelsior and among the tables in the press room, the most anticipated game is already in full swing: the Leone guessing game. Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor's "Naza" dominates the predictions.
The documentary, shot at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, reveals the details of the systems behind Israel's planned killings of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. The reception in the Sala Grande for the premiere set a record for the Festival, with over 25 minutes of applause, surpassing the record set last year by "The Voice of Hind Rajab" (24 minutes) by Tunisian director Kaouther ben Hania, who is on this year's jury.
While the Golden Lion appears almost certain, it is more difficult to reconstruct the rest of the list of winners, even if the first rumours are starting to circulate.
According to Adnkronos, directors Lee Chang-dong ('Possible Love') and Stéphane Brizé ('A Good Little Soldier') are returning to the Lido, a sign that often heralds an award. There's also talk of actor John Malkovich returning for 'Wild Horse Nine,' leading to speculation of a possible Volpi Cup for Best Actor.
Other titles eligible for recognition include 'Woman Unknown' by director May el-Toukhy, one of the few women in competition, 'Dau' by Ilya Khrzhanovsky, 'Look Back' by Hirokazu Koreeda, 'Mr.
Nelson, Did You Kill People?' by Shinya Tsukamoto and 'Buckingham Forest' by Werner Herzog (the Mara sisters could win the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress).
Despite five films in competition, Italy risks being left empty-handed in the main list, a result not seen since 2018. Hopes now rest on a recognition in the Orizzonti section for Riccardo Scamarcio's performance in "Children of the Monkey." The jury, chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal, met yesterday for final deliberations. According to Adnkronos, there were differences of opinion, suggesting the final decision on the awards was not unanimous.
