Adnkronos (Adnkronos) – The 83rd Venice Film Festival is drawing to a close. The film "God Laughs" by Giovanni Veronesi, presented out of competition, closes the festival. In the heart of the 17th century, a man speaks of God like no other: Friar Leopoldo of Casamacchia, played by Pierfrancesco Favino. While the Church preaches in Latin, Friar Leopoldo recounts the Gospel with a contagious joy that inspires relief and hope.
He speaks of a God close to humanity, capable of laughing with them. His message spread, winning the hearts of thousands who began to follow him everywhere, while churches emptied.
The echo of that voice reaches Rome and sounds dangerous to those who govern by fear; the Pope decides to entrust the case to Cardinal Maculani (played by Silvio Orlando), the most authoritative inquisitor of his time.
What begins as a trial turns into an unexpected confrontation, challenging unshakeable beliefs. While Leopoldo's fate seems sealed, unexpected paths open up for Maculani and those gripped by doubt. Because you can silence a voice, but not what it has left in others.
All is eagerly awaited for the awards ceremony, scheduled for 19 pm in the Sala Grande, hosted by actors Greta Scarano and Nicolas Maupas. The Lions will be awarded before the screening of Veronesi's film. Francesca Michielin will perform during the evening.
