Rome, November 4 (askanews) – Tinto Brass, director of erotica and a maverick master of Italian cinema, has died at the age of 93. He had been ill for some time, his family announced the news. In September, the Venice Film Festival paid homage to him with the restored version of his pop thriller “Col cuore in gola” (1967), presented in the pre-opening ceremony. Born in Milan to a Venetian family, as a young man he moved to Paris and encountered the Nouvelle Vague, before making his directorial debut in 1963 with “In capo al mondo”. His freedom of expression, eroticism as a stylistic feature, and provocations immediately encountered censorship and problems.

From “The Scream” (1968) to “Salon Kitty” (1976), from “The Key” and “Paprika” to “Così fan tutte”, he inaugurated an erotic trend in cinema and then concentrated on the path of sexual liberation of his female characters, often with irony and irreverent spirit, questioning the contradictions of the present and the possibility of questioning the dominant codes. Sexual provocation, irreverence.

With his films he consecrated many actresses, who became symbols of erotic or genre cinema in those years: among the many, Stefania Sandrelli, Serena Grandi, Debora Caprioglio, Claudia Koll.
