Generic drugs make an important contribution because they generate savings for the public coffers, which will reach €1,2 billion in 2026-2028." This was stated by Marcello Gemmato, Undersecretary of Health, at the presentation today in Rome of the 11th Report of the Egualia Observatory on Affordable Medicines, produced with the contribution of Nomisma and Teha Group.
"This is a very important fact for the sustainability of the healthcare system, which," Gemmato explains, "continues to ensure all citizens, as is the case today, the free availability of both traditional drugs for the treatment of chronic diseases and innovative drugs released onto the market and promptly authorized by AIFA.
In this way, a wide range of therapeutic options are made available to doctors and specialists for citizens."
"In this context, however," the Undersecretary emphasizes, "Europe tells us that Italy is unfortunately among the last countries in the use of generic drugs. And within the country, Southern Italy is even further behind the North.
This data is likely the result of a historical legacy that associates generic drugs with something inferior to the original drug. This is not the case: these drugs must meet the same rigorous requirements of quality, safety, and efficacy. "Therefore, we need to invest in training and information, starting with healthcare professionals, so that they share and convey to citizens the opportunity to use generic drugs," concludes Gemmato.
