Summer 2026 is heading into a phase of change, with the arrival of an Atlantic low-pressure system set to interrupt the long period of warm weather. Starting Wednesday, September 9th, the instability will gradually extend to central and northern Italy , accompanied by a drop in temperatures, rain, and thunderstorms. The worsening conditions will be further exacerbated by the combination of colder air at high altitude and the heat accumulated in recent weeks, potentially resulting in severe weather events, gusts of wind, and hailstorms.
On Thursday the 10th, the front will also reach the Tyrrhenian regions and the South , particularly Sicily, Campania, Puglia, and Calabria, while Lazio, Tuscany, and Marche will remain exposed to severe weather. The first clearings could appear in Piedmont and Lombardy. On Friday the 11th, further showers are expected, especially in Central Italy, with more localized showers in the North and South, where temperatures will begin to drop more noticeably.
A gradual improvement is expected on Saturday the 12th and for the rest of the weekend, although residual thunderstorms are possible, especially in Puglia, Calabria and Basilicata.
The unstable phase could continue until mid-September , but it is not yet possible to establish whether the heat will return in the second part of the month.
Bad weather, summer gives way to rain and thunderstorms: warnings are sounded
The worsening conditions have prompted the Civil Protection Department to issue a severe weather warning for several areas of the country. The orange alert applies to western Emilia-Romagna and much of Lombardy and Veneto , while the yellow alert applies to Trentino-Alto Adige, Umbria, and parts of Valle d'Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Calabria.
In Liguria, Arpal has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms in the central and eastern regions from 8:00 a.m. to midnight on Wednesday, September 9, with the possibility of heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds; in the western region, a low probability of severe thunderstorms is indicated. In Veneto, the risk of hydrogeological and thunderstorms will remain high through Thursday, with a more intense phase at least until midday and potentially heavy storms, especially in the plains.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia will be under a yellow alert from 6:00 a.m. Wednesday to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, with showers, strong thunderstorms, and winds, particularly between the plains and the coast. In Piedmont, the yellow alert concerns thunderstorms with hail and gusts, especially in upper Piedmont, the Lake Maggiore area, the Cuneo valleys, and the central-northern plains. A return to more stable conditions is expected on Thursday, except for light showers near the Apennines.
The national forecast also predicts heavy rainfall, frequent electrical activity, and possible hailstorms across much of the North and Tuscany. Meanwhile, in Milan, the Metropolitan City has ordered "extremely urgent interventions" to expedite the cleanup of the Naviglio Grande canal, where a trail of hydrocarbons has stretched for approximately 28 kilometers. Crews are vacuuming up the contained material to prevent rains from dispersing it and causing damage downstream, in the areas of Robecco sul Naviglio, Corbetta, and Cassinetta di Lugagnano.
