Raptor del Sol in the Elpis Foundation Basement

Milan, October 16 (askanews) – Until January 31, 2027, in the Basement della Lavanderia spaces, the Elpis Foundation presents the solo exhibition by composer and artist Carlota Gadea Marqués, Raptor del Sol, curated by Threes Productions. The project draws on the tradition of the Guanches and the myth of Guayota, the deity imprisoned within Mount Teide after kidnapping the Sun and condemning the earth to an endless drought.

Through three exhibition spaces, the show retraces the search for water as a search for life. Ruggero Pietromarchi, founder and artistic director of Threes, introduces the project: "This is the fourth Basement event, and we are delighted to have Carlota Gadea Marquez, a Spanish artist, presenting a new project: Raptor del Sol, a site-specific project spread across the three Basement spaces.

At the center is a series of paintings, abstract paintings that take on the form of the mythical Guayote, this demonic figure connected to the volcano, another recurring theme in Carlota's exhibition project—thus abstract yet extremely material figures. This is followed by Carlota's major production, a ten-minute video shot across the Canary Islands, from Lanzarote to La Palma, which recounts the volcano's presence, its destructive yet life-giving power. There's this tension between life and death, also reflected in a contemporary technological dimension with these machines roaming around as if they were Martians.

Finally, the journey concludes with an immersive installation centered on a mineral she took inspiration from this mineral collection at the Natural History Museum in Madrid, illuminated by this almost Martian light, thus creating this immersive, dystopian situation, with this soundscape that takes inspiration precisely from the frequencies of these minerals."
