(Adnkronos) –
Organized crime from Calabria and Campania is implicated in post-earthquake reconstruction contracts in the Marche region. A comprehensive investigation by the Guardia di Finanza's Ancona Provincial Command, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, has been concluded. It has uncovered an illicit system in contracts awarded for private reconstruction projects following the 2016 earthquake and in public contracts awarded by the Marche Region, Erdis Marche, and the University of Camerino.
A total of 51 people are under investigation. The investigating judge has ordered pre-trial detention for eight of them. Pre-trial questioning has also been ordered for five others, and over €57 million has been seized. Over 50 searches and document acquisitions are underway in the provinces of Ancona, Macerata, Pesaro-Urbino, Fermo, Rome, Caserta, Naples, Reggio Calabria, Modena, Terni, Chieti, Treviso, and Piacenza, involving approximately 230 Guardia di Finanza officers.
The operation, called 'Reconstruction' and conducted by the Ancona Economic and Financial Police unit, was divided into several strands, including one involving aggravated fraud to obtain public funds for private reconstruction in the areas affected by the earthquakes. Investigators explain that the work was also subcontracted to individuals linked to organized crime in Calabria and Campania.
A second line of investigation concerns corrupt practices allegedly carried out by public officials and entrepreneurs.
