Adnkronos (Adnkronos) – Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the 11 BRICS member countries to "reject all forms of protectionism," speaking at the summit in New Delhi less than two weeks before his planned visit to Washington. "We must uphold the multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization (WTO) and reject all forms of protectionism," Xi said, quoted by China's official news agency Xinhua.
Xi then called on member states to “oppose infringements on other countries’ sovereignty and interference in their internal affairs, and participate constructively in resolving critical issues.”
"Greater involvement of countries is needed to ensure peace and stability on the global stage," Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his speech at the 18th BRICS summit underway in New Delhi.
“The entire system of international relations is failing due to the actions of some countries that provoke conflicts and create new areas of tension,” the Kremlin leader argued.
"The global landscape is undergoing truly radical geopolitical, geoeconomic, technological, and social transformations. Much is changing: first and foremost, people's lifestyles, the level of healthcare, the quality of the environment, the structure of society, and the demographic map of the world are transforming," Putin was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying.
Strengthening energy security, opposing unilateral sanctions, and working to resolve conflicts by addressing their root causes are the key points stated in the joint declaration.
In the final text, the BRICS also expressed their concern about the growing risks of nuclear conflict and, in this light, called for disarmament, arms control, and non-proliferation.
The BRICS nations also expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East and West Asia and called for maximum restraint to prevent further escalation.
The BRICS also called for the “protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure” and for greater use of “dialogue and diplomacy to achieve international peace, security and stability in a context of growing polarization and mistrust.”
The joint statement also emphasizes the need to maintain the smooth flow of global trade, supply chains, and energy. The BRICS countries also expressed concern about deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities protected by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), emphasizing that nuclear safety, security, and safeguards must be respected, even during armed conflict.
