(Adnkronos) – "If Elly Schlein loses the primaries, the Democratic Party faces collapse." Massimo Cacciari analyzes the broader scenario following the approval of the new electoral law. The center-left will choose its prime ministerial candidate in the primaries. First, however, it must agree on a platform. For the broader party, winning the elections "is possible, especially with the Vannacci unknown."
Governing is a different matter: "The risk is doing nothing. We should acknowledge a shred of truth: coalitions are divided internally, they lack a common line, and this is holding them back," Cacciari told Corriere della Sera. In the center-right, "they have broken the record for longevity but haven't even brought home a single significant reform.
Not that it's easy, with wars and all that. They're divided on many things, but they have a strong leader who holds them together. On the left, both unity on the program and a shared leadership are lacking. Even the Olive Tree was divided on many things, but it had Romano Prodi. Now there isn't even a single figure who can act as a unifier."
Regarding the new electoral law requiring the nomination of a prime ministerial candidate, he says: “I don't see anything wrong with it; it's a way of providing clarity to the electorate.
Just look at the experience of mayors.” And returning to the center-left, he states: “I see them headed down the disastrous path of primaries. If Elly Schlein were to lose the challenge, the Democratic Party would face collapse. I'm not a Schlein fan, but with her defeat, the same political class that led the party to decline would return to leadership of the Democrats. If, on the other hand, she were to win the primaries, she would have to deal with the Five Star Movement electorate, who tend to vote only for their own people.” And if Giuseppe Conte were to win? “We would be heading into an election campaign with the alliance's main party in disarray.” For Cacciari, “the broad field should start with a courageous program” on two fronts: “foreign policy, fully affirming the European tradition: we are for peace. And the economy.” “If they are capable of doing this, clearly, then they could also, at that point, try to reach an agreement on who can best implement it, avoiding the lottery of the primaries.”
