A fatal accident occurred on the A18 Messina-Catania motorway at dawn this morning, between Giarre and Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, shortly after the Giarre exit towards Messina. One person died and several were seriously injured.
The collision involved an articulated lorry used for transporting rocks and a Fiat Panda.
According to an initial reconstruction being examined by the Highway Patrol, the heavy vehicle lost a sidewall along the roadway, causing a violent impact with the small car. The driver of the car lost his life, while the other passengers on board suffered serious injuries.
Emergency medical services arrived on the scene with the assistance of a helicopter, which rushed the most critically injured to the Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, along with firefighter teams.
Traffic in the direction of Messina is experiencing heavy delays and long queues to allow for surveys, rescue operations, and vehicle removal.
