The shooting that occurred during the April 25th celebrations in Rome is back in the spotlight with the conclusion of the trial against Eitan Bondì, accused of attacking two ANPI protesters . Months after the incident, the court handed down the sentence, but the decision has sparked a strong reaction from the association, which is contesting the reclassification of the crime.
Bondì's defense and the ANPI's protest after the verdict
Upon leaving the courtroom, attorney Cesare Gai, who along with his colleague Gianluca Tognozzi represented the 22-year-old, commented on the matter, explaining that his client " just wants to forget this story ." Marina Pierlorenzi, president of the Rome provincial ANPI, took a completely different view, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the judge's decision and the reduction in the severity of the charge.
" We feel it's unfair that the crime was downgraded because our protesters were only guilty of wearing a handkerchief ," she stated. The association's representative then emphasized that the accused had never issued an apology: " We, as ANPI, have not received an apology from anyone ."
The National Association of Italian Parties (ANPI), which joined the proceedings as a civil party, is now awaiting the ruling's reasons to understand the rationale behind the reclassification of the crime.
Eitan Bondì convicted for shooting at ANPI militants
Eitan Bondì , the 22-year-old who allegedly shot two ANPI activists at the end of a Liberation Day demonstration on April 25, received a four-month suspended prison sentence. As reported by Rai News , this was the ruling of the preliminary hearing judge of the Rome Court, who concluded the proceedings conducted under a summary procedure . The judge changed the classification of the crime from attempted bodily harm to assault. The young man was, however, acquitted of the charge of illegal possession of a weapon in a public place.
According to the prosecutor's reconstruction, Bondì allegedly approached Nicola Fasciano and Rossana Gabrieli near Schuster Park, in the Ostiense neighborhood, on a scooter, firing several shots with an airsoft gun. The two members of the association suffered injuries to the face and right shoulder . CCTV footage, which captured a white Honda SH approaching the protesters, allowed investigators to identify the alleged perpetrator.
Bondì, arrested two days after the incident, was initially transferred to Regina Coeli prison and later placed under house arrest , a measure revoked about a month ago. As reported by Agi , during interrogations he admitted to shooting Fasciano and Gabrieli, also declaring that he had disposed of the weapon used.
