(Adnkronos) – France is waking up in a blistering heatwave: today, Monday, June 22, 35 million people are on red alert as nearly the entire country faces unrelenting extreme temperatures.
More than 90% of the population will still be affected by an orange or red alert, while the most affected departments are home to 3,85 million people over 75, the most vulnerable group.
A total of 63,46 million people will be affected in 89 departments, in the midst of a heat wave described by the government as "particularly intense and early".
Environmentalists are calling for up to five days of climate-related leave per year to protect the most exposed workers. Meanwhile, 845 schools and colleges will remain closed, and another 1.800 will dismiss students early.
SNCF is urging “vulnerable” people to avoid taking the train, with CEO Jean Castex warning that “accidents” on the rail network cannot be ruled out.
