(Adnkronos) – While fuel is running low in some regions, despite the end of the excise tax discount, Facile.it has found, based on data published by the ministry and updated to October 14, that there are still some self-service stations on Italy's road network where you can fill up for less than €2,20/liter.
The study conducted by Facile.it examined all the distributors surveyed by Mimit in Italy that communicated a price update from October 5th onwards for diesel and/or unleaded petrol, excluding those on motorways.
According to estimates, looking at diesel, 26% still managed to stay under the cap, which, in absolute values, translates to approximately 5.000 distributors out of over 19.500 analyzed.
It remains to be seen whether – observes Facile.it – the renewed discount implemented by some distributors will change the situation in the next updates.
As regards petrol, however, the situation is rosier and the petrol station attendants who manage to stay below the threshold of 2 euros per litre are over 10.200 (52%).
How does the situation unfold at the regional level? For diesel, the luckiest drivers are those in the Marche region, where 38% of the surveyed distributors kept prices below the €2,20 per liter threshold.
Abruzzo ranks second (36% of surveyed gas stations still have prices below the cap), followed by Lazio and Umbria (equally ranked 31%). Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Valle d'Aosta, and Liguria (30%) are at the bottom of the podium. Looking at the rankings in reverse, with the regions with the fewest gas stations maintaining prices below €2,20/liter, we find Campania (14%), followed by Basilicata (16%), and Calabria (19%).
The situation is better for gasoline; Valle d'Aosta (62%) leads the ranking, followed by Sicily and Marche, regions where 60% of the surveyed stations had self-service prices below €2 per liter at the time of the survey. Lazio (58%) comes in at the bottom of the podium. If we consider the regions on the other side of the spectrum, we find Basilicata (36%), Campania (37%), and Calabria (42%).
Analyzing official MIMIT data updated to October 16, 2026, the average price of gasoline on the road in Italy, self-service, is currently €2,034 per liter. For diesel, the average price is €2,256 per liter. On the motorway network, the average price of gasoline is €2,048 per liter; diesel stands at €2,278 per liter.
