(Adnkronos) –
Severe weather is forecast for Italy at least until Saturday, with heavy rain and thunderstorms in central and southern Italy. Sunny skies will return, but further deterioration is expected. According to the latest weather forecasts, the first true autumn Atlantic low pressure system to reach Italy is bringing widespread rainfall, strong winds, and a drop in temperatures.
"Heavy rain is expected across much of Italy until Saturday," Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist at iLMeteo.it, told Adnkronos.
The low pressure system is causing heavy showers, especially from eastern Liguria to Tuscany and from Lazio to Campania. Coastal areas will be most affected by thunderstorms. Rain will also be frequent in the Northeast, with significant accumulations in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Particular attention is expected for heavy rainfall in Tuscany, Lazio, and Campania.
Today, Friday 9 October, "the bad weather will hit the South especially, there will also be a drop in maximum temperatures across the whole country and the winds will be strong, from the Mistral in Sardinia, with rough seas", adds Tedici.
“Saturday will see the last day of bad weather concentrated in the South and the Central Adriatic, then on Sunday there will be large clearings almost everywhere in an autumnal temperature context and with highs almost everywhere around 22-23°C”, concludes the meteorologist.
Sunday's respite, however, won't mark the end of the instability. Over the next week, Italy will be affected by both unstable and cool air currents descending from Northern Europe, which will trigger further rain and strong winds, and by a high pressure system that will extend towards our country from the Azores.
The start of the week will still be partly unstable and windy in central and southern Italy.
In the early days of next week, our country will be affected by the arrival of unstable currents descending from northeastern Europe, which will keep the weather conditions rather unsettled, especially in central and southern Italy.
Rain, alternating with clearings, is expected as early as Monday, October 12, particularly in Lazio, Puglia, and Calabria.
In the following days, between Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th October, the possibility of further showers on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts cannot be ruled out.
All of this will be accompanied by strong north-easterly winds that will blow with gusts exceeding 60-70 km/h, causing a general drop in temperatures and the possibility of storm surges along the most exposed coasts.
This is a fresh northeasterly wind that, especially starting Tuesday the 13th, will blow strongly along the southern Adriatic and Ionian coasts, with strong gusts. The weather will be more stable in the remaining areas.
Subsequently, starting Thursday, October 15, a high pressure system from the Azores will advance towards Italy, bringing more sunshine to the entire country. Temperatures are also expected to rise slightly, once again rising above the reference climate average, with temperatures reaching 23-24°C in many cities in central and southern Italy and on the two major islands.
This respite, however, could be short-lived. A new, structured depression of northern European origin is expected as early as the following weekend, October 17-18, which could trigger a new phase of disturbance, with the possible formation of a low pressure system over our seas.
